A good swath of Sechelt will want to have a book and a warm blanket on hand Sunday.
BC Hydro is planning a 12-hour power outage Sunday, Feb. 6, for approximately 1,200 customers in Sechelt.
The outage is to allow three crews (including one from the Lower Mainland) to replace equipment on up to 20 power poles in the area, Karla Louwers, public affairs coordinator for BC Hydro, said in an email.
Part of the work is to replace older porcelain cutouts with polymeric cutouts, BC Hydro’s standard, Louwers shared. “A cutout is a protective piece of equipment, a fuse, that will open when a fault is encountered and isolate the trouble without passing on the disturbance to the rest of the electrical system.”
The porcelain cutouts are “more susceptible to failure” said Louwers, particularly near the ocean.
“Planned work helps improve reliability and prevents unexpected outages that are often longer in duration and more disruptive,” said Louwers.
Though they hope to keep the scheduled date and time of the planned outage, there is a cold weather temperature guideline for planned outages and the company could consider postponing the work should extreme temperatures be expected, Louwers indicated.
As for how the outages will affect local affairs – expect outage-related closures. The SCRD has said the Sunshine Coast Arena will be closed 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day.
