Sunshine Coast RCMP are warning the public about a paid of fraud cases making the rounds on the Coast.

On July 10, a Coast resident reported a possible fraud to RCMP after she received a phone call from a male who advised the resident she had won a large sum of money and a luxury car.

"The male then asked the resident for some information, including her credit card number, which he stated he needed in order to send her the money," said RCMP in a news release. "Unfortunately, the resident gave the caller all the requested information. The resident was advised to contact her banks and credit companies immediately. Police remind the public to be very wary about whom they give personal information to and to remember that if it's too good to be true, it most likely is."

RCMP recommends residents visit www.phonebusters.com to learn more about fraud prevention.

"Another common overpayment scheme is also hitting Coast residents. Residents with goods for sale on Internet marketplaces are being approached by potential buyers who send the seller cheques well over the asking price. The buyers then ask the sellers to return the extra funds by wire or other method. The sellers then learn the cheques are bogus and are out the funds they refunded," say RCMP.
