Advocacy group SC101 didn’t just get their petition presented at the B.C. Legislature last Wednesday – they also got to make their pitch for a new highway to Transportation Minister Claire Trevena.

SC101 member Robin Merriott described it as “a very good meeting,” during which the group said the Sunshine Coast was due for a new highway to run from Langdale to at least as far as West Sechelt.

“The road we have on the Coast is not a true highway. We don’t want them to throw money at the existing one we have,” said Merriott. “We want a highway, a true highway, which would alleviate all the pressure on the road.”

Trevena did not dismiss the idea and acknowledged the group’s points, but she made no commitments.

Powell-River Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons, who presented the petition, was also present at the meeting.

The petition included letters of support from BC Ferries CEO Mark Collins and Liberal MP Pamela Goldsmith-Jones.

Merriott said SC101 will continue to advocate for the new highway.

The group is also awaiting the results of a review of a 30-kilometre section of the highway between Langdale and the north end of Sechelt.
