A metal theft investigation led to the discovery of an illegal marijuana operation in Sechelt this week.

On Sept. 19 Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a report of a theft of metal on Seaview Lane in Sechelt.

Cpl. Steve Chubey said the complainant reported approximately $1,600 worth of aluminum tech cable had been taken from the property overnight.

Police were conducting neighbouring enquiries when they noted an odour of marijuana emitting from a neighbouring residence, said Chubey in a news release. Police spoke with the occupants of the residence and arrested its male occupant. A search warrant was obtained for the residence, which subsequently yielded 62 marijuana plants and the stolen aluminum tech wire.

The 41-year-old suspect has since been released on a promise to appear for a later court date and undertaking. The RCMP is recommending charges of obstruction of a police officer, production of a controlled substance, theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. The suspects name cannot be released until all the charges are sworn and approved before the courts.
