The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary - Pacific Unit 12 Halfmoon Bay (CCGA-12) helped organize an exploration visit to Merry Island for three local kids in Beavers, their leaders and parents on Sunday, Oct 23.Lighthouse keepers Don and Kathy explained the history of the lighthouse operations and how some of the instruments they monitor are used to help forecast the weather, aiding mariners in local waters. Following cookies and tea the group hiked around the island and enjoyed the beautiful flora and fauna, the historic buildings once used by the original keepers and the awe-inspiring views overlooking the Strait of Georgia. A great day was had by all, including the seals that greeted the group on the ride back to Halfmoon Bay dock. The Beaver troop made a donation to CCGA-12 as thanks for the trip.
