The age-old saying that "two heads are better than one" is true. Research has shown that support groups can accelerate learning, as well as provide the comfort of being with other people who understand what you're going through.

The Sunshine Coast mental health centre provides many group programs. These include groups for managing depression and anxiety, stress reduction/relaxation, women's anger exploration, postpartum depression, women's trauma recovery, self esteem, life skills, a dementia group, a dementia caregiver support group, and a recovery group for individuals who are struggling with mental health issues as well as substances.

The health centre also offers supportive group programs for individuals struggling with a major mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

The groups generally run once a week for 1.5 to two hours, and range from six weeks (assertiveness) through six months (self esteem), as well as ongoing (recovery group). They are offered during the day, with occasional groups provided in the evening, during the spring and fall.

You don't need a physician referral to attend most of the groups. There are no fees involved. All of the programs are based on well-researched, effective approaches to dealing with problems, and are facilitated by one to two VCH staff at Sunshine Coast Mental Health Services.

Call Eva at 604-885-6101 for more information, or to set up a time to meet with one of the staff.
