On Jan. 23, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) board approved the final report on the parks and recreation master plan that was presented by the master plan steering committee.
The purpose of the plan is to provide a vision for the future and strategies for the next 10 years to achieve that vision. It will focus on healthy lifestyle opportunities, community development, parks, trail and walkway development, recreation facilities, and volunteer programs.
"We are tremendously proud of the parks and recreation master plan and believe the values of our community are its foundation," said SCRD board chair Garry Nohr. "We extend our thanks to the master plan steering committee, in particular, chair Anne Titcomb, and vice chair Pat Hunt, as well as the many community members who contributed to the development of the plan, through enthusiastic attendance at our community open houses, by participating in the telephone survey, by attending our steering committee meetings and by sending us their valuable comments."
The master plan outlines four basic goals for parks and recreation in the region, as well as how these goals will be achieved, the roles the SCRD should play to support those goals, and what guides the decision-making process.
"Parks and recreation is essential to the quality of life in our community," adds Paul Fenwick, SCRD general manager of community services. "Open spaces, services, and facilities contribute to our well-being and make our community an attractive place in which to live, work, play, and invest."
In order for the parks master plan to accurately reflect the values and priorities of the Sunshine Coast community, the public was encouraged to provide input throughout the planning process through focus groups, open houses and surveys.
"Over 700 citizens participated in various ways to inform the Master Plan," said Titcomb. "This ensured that the community's voice was at the very heart of the plan. What we have is a plan that clearly articulates a vision for recreation and parks on the Sunshine Coast, a mission that tells us how to get there, and clearly outlined goals."
