A Sechelt man is dead after he was hit by a dump truck in Sechelt Tuesday morning.
According to Sunshine Coast RCMP, James Edward Wilson, 74, was struck by the truck just after 9:40 a.m. when he was trying to cross Wharf Road at Highway 101.
RCMP said the dump truck was stopped at the northeast corner of the intersection, signalling to turn north onto Wharf Road when the accident occurred.
"[The driver] pulled out a little bit and stopped and somehow didn't see the pedestrian and struck the pedestrian and the pedestrian probably died instantly," said Const. Adriaan de Jong.
De Jong said it was unlikely any charges will be laid.
"It looks quite likely that the pedestrian was at fault. It's still not completely clear, but that's the way I am leaning towards," he said.
After doing an inspection of the truck, de Jong said he could find no mechanical reason for the accident.
De Jong said he also ruled out speed and alcohol as factors in the accident.
One witness on the scene said she and her sister saw the accident from the coffee shop on the northeast corner of Highway 101 and Wharf Road. Her sister, a nurse's aide, attempted to perform CPR on the man immediately, but was not successful.
Traffic had to be directed through the intersection for several hours as RCMP conducted their investigation.
