A 47-year-old man was lucky all he got was a violation ticket after jumping onto a moving ferry Wednesday night.

According to West Vancouver Police Sgt. Trevor Jones, the man jumped onto the Queen of Surrey just before 9 p.m. as it was pulling away from the dock in Horseshoe Bay.

James said ferry staff stopped the boat and pushed back into the dock. They waited for police to arrive, where the man was escorted off the ferry.

"He said he had no money, but wanted to get back to the Coast, so he jumped onto the ship," said James. "He was given a ticket for evading the fare It was a very dangerous move."

James said B.C. Ferries was still investigating.

A call to B.C. Ferries media spokesperson Deborah Marshall was not returned before press deadline.

A B.C. Ferries worker on the scene who witnessed the incident said it was a stupid move with potentially dangerous consequences.

"If he had jumped 15 seconds later, he would have been in the props," she said.

The worker said she heard this is not the first time the man has attempted to jump onto the ferry as it left the terminal.
