A 60-year-old man from Gibsons died following a single vehicle crash near the intersection of Highway 101 and Jack Road on Jan. 3.

Media Relations Officer for the Sunshine Coast RCMP, Karen Whitby confirmed to Coast Reporter that the single-vehicle accident occurred at about 1:15 p.m. She said the sole occupant of the small sedan involved was transported to Sechelt hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. "There was no indication of impairment,” Whitby said. The name of the deceased has not been released.

RCMP, Fire Departments and BC Ambulance responded to the incident. Several witnesses to the crash also remained at the scene. Traffic on Highway 101 in the area was delayed over a six-hour period following the crash.

Given continued winter weather conditions on the Coast, Whitby cautioned all drivers to ensure their vehicles are prepared for travel on slippery roads with proper tires. She also stressed the importance of being mindful of road conditions and driving accordingly.

”Drivers need to slow down and leave lots of space between vehicles. But when it comes to ice, it is very difficult as you need to maintain a safe and consistent speed.”
