A major heat wave is expected this weekend over southern British Columbia, including the Sunshine Coast and Howe Sound.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Thursday, June 25, warning that high temperatures will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
“Temperatures are expected to approach 40 degrees over the Southern Interior and the low 30s along the South Coast,” the statement said. “The highest temperatures are expected Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. Several daily temperature records are likely to fall with the possibility of monthly records falling come the end of June.”
Temperatures on the South Coast may decrease slightly Sunday afternoon ahead of a weak weather disturbance that is expected to move onshore that evening, bringing the chance of thunderstorms.
“A slight cooling trend will begin Monday; however, the unseasonably hot weather will persist through Canada Day,” the statement said.
