Local makes smart meter movie

Josh Del Sol, a filmmaker from the Coast, wants the world to know what he's discovered about smart meters.

Josh Del Sol, a filmmaker from the Coast, wants the world to know what he's discovered about smart meters.

The 36 year old has put invested a year of research into his 104-minute movie Take Back Your Power: Investigating the Smart Grid, and he hopes it will inspire people to say no to the power utility's new metering device.

Del Sol was living on the Coast in 2012 when he got the idea for the film his first full-length feature.

He said that after a smart meter was connected to his friend's house, that friend started feeling nauseous, complained of headaches and was unable to sleep.

Then I started to find out about all the other issues to do with smart meters the in-home surveillance capabilities, the hacking vulnerabilities, cost increases going up unjustifiably and the fires and the damages that are caused by the meters, Del Sol said.

So I started out making what I thought would be a 10-minute YouTube video and the whole project snowballed, and now as of September we have a full-length feature film.

That film has been screened in four countries now (Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada) with plans for more screenings in the future.

On the Coast the film has had two screenings so far with another slated for Nov. 20 at Chatelech Secondary School at 7 p.m. There is one final showing on the Coast on Nov. 28 at the Halfmoon Haven Retreat Centre at 7 p.m. All showings are by donation.

Del Sol lives in the Seattle area now; however, he said he will likely be available to answer questions following the Coast screenings via Skype.
