Local chapter going strong

Habitat for Humanity volunteers haven't been resting on their laurels lately.

Habitat for Humanity volunteers haven't been resting on their laurels lately. In fact, activity for the group has never been higher as they work towards completing their duplex on Reef Road and start work on their next project - Sunshine Coast Village, seven duplex units in Wilson Creek.

On the May 31 weekend, approximatelya dozenvolunteers from Telus and the Telus Pioneers (retirees) showed up to help at the Reef Road site.

"Although it was a bit of a zoo with just three of us from Habitat to organize and show people what to do, it went very, very well," said Habitat vice-chair Bill Robinson. "We got lots of siding up and more work done on the drywall inside. Things are really looking great and the progress the last few weeks has been just amazing."

The Habitat recycling program continues to yield record numbers for the local chapter.

According to Robinson, the Sechelt team is now working out of their new six-metre container (twice the size of the old one) and it seems to be attracting cans and bottlesin record numbers.

"The money has just been pouring in and that's good because with all the work going on at Reef Road and Sunshine Coast Village, we need it," he said.

The Sunshine Coast Village project is getting an early boost in construction, thanks to a partnership between the School District No. 46 Grade 12 apprentice framing carpentry class under the direction of teacher Poul Jakobsen.

The first floor wallsand the second floor decks for the next duplex (the first of seven at Sunshine Coast Village) are now completed. The second floor walls are now under construction. Robinson said Habitat will order the trusses soon and they are very optimistic the roof sheeting will be completed before the class ends for the summer.

"We're very, very thankful for their work," said Robinson. "Like the recyclers we could not build a duplex a year without them: two more deserving families each year with a comfortable home they otherwise could not afford."
