Leaving coals in fire pit nets visitor $575 fine

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following from July 4 to 11: On July 11, police assisted Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) with a report of unattended coals left in a fire pit in the 1500 block of Ocean Beach Esplanade, Gibsons.

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following from July 4 to 11:

On July 11, police assisted Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) with a report of unattended coals left in a fire pit in the 1500 block of Ocean Beach Esplanade, Gibsons. GVFD had located the non-resident male fire starter and determined that after cooking food over a coal fire, he had been told by a local to put the coals in the fire pit. Police issued the visitor a violation ticket under the Wildfire Act with an associated fine of $575 for failure to extinguish fire. The GVFD will be following up with educating the local about proper wildfire prevention protocols.

Drone Intruder

• On July 7 at approximately 2:45 p.m., a resident in the 700 block of North Road, Gibsons, reported hearing, then seeing, a drone hovering in the back alley as well as over the resident’s property line for at least 15 minutes. The resident also heard voices but was unable to see who was behind the property fence. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2021-4521.

Traffic

• Police received a traffic complaint through the Online Crime Reporting system about an incident that occurred on July 6 on the bypass near the BC Ferries Terminal in Langdale. The witness reported an aggressive driver who tailgated another vehicle, swerved back and forth in his lane, and appeared to attempt to squeeze in between the two lanes of traffic. The aggressive and dangerous driving behaviour continued and as the witness was able to note the vehicle details including a licence plate number, and is willing to provide a statement, the file is still under investigation

Collision

• At approximately 6:45 a.m. on July 6, Emergency Health Services reported a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Garden Bay Road, Garden Bay, after the first westbound vehicle attempted to make a left turn off Highway 101 into a business and collided with the second eastbound vehicle travelling straight through. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported but both vehicles sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield on a left turn and the matter has been referred to ICBC.• On July 6 at approximately 7:30 a.m., police attended a motorcycle incident involving a deer in the 2700 block of Highway 101, Roberts Creek. The motorcyclist, who was treated on-scene by Emergency Health Services for a non-life-threatening injury, advised that he had been following a vehicle when the deer ran out into traffic; the vehicle was able to swerve around the deer but the motorcyclist was unable to avoid a collision. The motorcycle had to be towed from the scene due to damage and the deer did not survive the incident. The matter has been referred to ICBC.


• On July 10 at approximately 5 p.m., police attended a two-vehicle incident that occurred at the intersection of Highway 101 and Shorncliffe Avenue, Sechelt, after the first vehicle in the eastbound lane attempted to make a left turn onto Shorncliffe Avenue and collided into the second vehicle travelling in the westbound lane. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene, and all drivers and occupants were taken to Sechelt Hospital for assessment and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the first vehicle, who advised she had not seen the oncoming second vehicle, was issued a violation ticket for improper turn at an intersection. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Theft

• On June 10, a suspect stole a five-foot tall SECO brand red and white fibreglass surveying pole and the attached LEICA brand red surveying prism from a work site in the 4800 block of Sinclair Bay Road, Garden Bay. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file number 2021-4512.


• On July 6, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., a suspect stole a bike from the box of a truck parked in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt. The stolen bike is described as a men’s white Norco with black pin stripes, distinct custom cork handles bars, and a beehive bell. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file number 2021-4582.


• Between June 1 and July 6, businesses in the Sechelt downtown core along Cowrie Street and in the Bank of Montreal plaza have reported ongoing thefts of trees, shrubs, plants, and flowers from more than a dozen large planters and pots set up on the street in an effort to beautify the area. Anyone with any information about this issue, or who may have been approached to buy heavily discounted plants, is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2021-800032.


• Overnight on July 9, a suspect stole an e-bike from a carport in the 500 block of Seaview Road, Gibsons. The electric bike, which had been locked up with two metal U-locks, is described as a black 2019 Voltbike Yukon 750 E model with black saddlebags, triathlon handlebars and no front fender. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2021-4583.

Break & Enter

• Overnight on July 8, a suspect or suspects gained entry to an unsecured shed in the 5700 block of Ebbtide Street, Sechelt, and stole two bicycles. One bike is described as a white adult-size Trek and the second is a youth-size teal green Norco. A lawn mower has also been reported as possibly stolen. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2021-4555.

Impaired

• On July 6, a witness reported a possible impaired driver in a running vehicle parked at Klein Lake, Madeira Park. The witness was able to provide a vehicle and driver description as well as licence plate number; police located the vehicle heading south on Highway 101 and initiated a traffic stop. The lone driver and occupant, who was exhibiting signs of possible impairment by alcohol, advised police that she had consumed alcohol a short time earlier. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and after two fail results, was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

• On July 7, witnesses reported a possible impaired driver on Inlet Avenue near Mermaid Street, Sechelt, after the vehicle hit the guard wire of a power pole. The driver exited the vehicle and was acting erratically before getting back into the vehicle and driving away. Police located the suspect vehicle nearby and initiated a traffic stop. The lone driver advised he’d had difficulty parking due to his sandal getting caught in the vehicle pedals. Police noted the driver, who did not possess a valid driver’s licence, exhibiting signs of being under the influence of drugs. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and a violation ticket for driving without a licence, and his vehicle was impounded. The matter has been referred to ICBC and RoadSafetyBC.


• On the late afternoon of July 12, witnesses reported a possible impaired driver travelling east from the 8000 block of Highway 101, Halfmoon Bay, to Jasper Road, West Sechelt. The suspect driver was seen swerving all over the road, colliding into a median before driving on, and nearly colliding into another vehicle before turning off the highway and pulling into a driveway where they struck a concrete wall before coming to a stop. Police located the driver and vehicle and noted the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication from alcohol. The driver, who advised police she’d consumed alcohol before driving, was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After a fail result, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Property Found

• On July 8, a very small iPhone found on Highway 101 near Selma Park Road, Sechelt, was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file 2021-4548.

• On July 12, a cellphone on Hopkins Beach was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file 2021-4639.
