Kids urged to be cautious this summer

School District No. 46 (SD46) is urging kids to be cautious this summer after an alleged attempted abduction in Sargeant Bay Provincial Park on June 16.

School District No. 46 (SD46) is urging kids to be cautious this summer after an alleged attempted abduction in Sargeant Bay Provincial Park on June 16.

The incident involved a woman allegedly asking a seven-year-old boy to return home with her to have some cake; however, the boy refused.

Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating the "suspicious occurrence" and have asked the community for tips, but so far the phone lines have been silent.

"The file is still open and if anyone has any information we'd definitely like to hear about it," said Sgt. Russ Howard.

SD46 sent a letter home during the last week of school, alerting parents to the issue and suggesting further reading on ways to stay safe.

"As we approach summer vacation, we would like to remind parents to reinforce caution with their child(ren) around strangers and discuss safety procedures," the notice stated.

It also pointed parents to Safety Cops and Canada Safety Council websites for more information.

"Student safety is always an important issue for us in our role of taking care of children for many hours every day," said SD46 superintendent Patrick Bocking. "We recognize that as a district we have a voice on the Sunshine Coast to reinforce important messages that many families will hear."

Tips to help kids stay safe this summer include setting up a code word with children that anyone who picks them up must recite, reminding them to never approach a stranger in a vehicle for any reason, explaining to children that adults don't need to ask kids for help and teaching them to use loud vocal statements to deter strangers from approaching.

Many more tips and information about "stranger danger" can be found on SD46 suggested websites: www.canadasafetycouncil.org and www.safetycops.com/stranger_danger.htm.
