Keith Julius elected as new councillor for shíshálh Nation

More than 220 votes were cast in the byelection to appoint a new hihewus (councillor)

shíshálh Nation has elected a new hihewus (councillor) to join its council. Keith Julius was elected Feb. 3, after receiving 64 votes. 

The results were posted by shíshálh Nation at 9:15 p.m. on Feb. 3, with a total of 225 votes counted.

Benedict Pierre IV came second, with 60 votes cast in his favour and Carol Louie came third with 54 votes. 

There were five candidates running for councillor, Andrea Paul received 27 votes and Randy Joe received 20. 

Julius has been a councillor before, both in 2017 and in 2011

Of the 1,070 eligible voters, 232 ballots were issued and seven were spoiled, resulting in a total of 225 ballots counted. 

The byelection was triggered when one of the Nation’s councillors, Shain Jackson, stepped down from his position due to personal reasons in mid 2023. 

Voting took place on Feb. 3, between 8 a.m. and 9.p.m. at the Elders’ Boardroom inside the CMS building.
