A sinkhole developed impacting the driving surface on Katherine Lake Road earlier this month. The road, which accesses the lake and an SCRD campground due to open in mid-May remains closed.

While bookings for summer stays at Katherine Lake campground starting May 17 are now open (on katherinelakecampground.ca), the road to that site has been closed since the first weekend in February.

On Feb. 5, the regional district posted a notice about the closure to its Facebook page.

According to Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) communications manager Aidan Buckley, the closure is anticipated to continue into the final week of the month. In a Feb. 13 email to Coast Reporter, Buckley outlined that a sinkhole developed along the road accessing the park (off Garden Bay Road in Area A  –Pender Harbour). He indicated the cause of the damage is believed to be “related to heavy rainfall which moved through the Sunshine Coast in late January early February. The surface water accumulation and high stream flow volume resulted in the erosion and undermining of a portion of the road."

He reported only one sinkhole has developed in the area and that SCRD staff are slated to undertake emergency road repairs starting Feb. 19.

The SCRD purchased the 37-hectare park that includes 29 camping spots for tents and recreational vehicles, a group camping site, plus a swimming beach, playground, and access road in 1990.
