Police departments across B.C. are hoping to make homes safer by declaring a province-wide gun amnesty this June.
The amnesty will give residents of a safe way to dispose of weapons, imitation weapons and related equipment and ammunition, which they are not legally entitled to own, or no longer want.
"The amnesty is an opportunity to reduce the number of firearms in our communities, while enhancing public and police officer safety," said Sunshine Coast RCMP media spokesperson Cpl. Steve Chubey. "Unwanted weapons are a potential hazard. If they are not properly secured and fall into the wrong hands, the results could be devastating."
If you have any unwanted weapons, firearms or ammunition, whether or not you are legally entitled to own, you may contact RCMP at 604-885-2266, and an officer will attend your residence to pick them up. The RCMP are urging the public not to drop firearms off at the detachment.
