IRSU blitz Sunshine Coast

The Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) was on the Sunshine Coast this week enforcing the Motor Vehicle Act. IRSU is comprised of RCMP and various municipal police departments from the Lower Mainland District.

IRSU is comprised of RCMP and various municipal police departments from the Lower Mainland District. IRSU initiative is road safety and traffic enforcement and their focus was primarily on the use of automatic licence plate recognition.

During the week there were three, 24-hour driving suspensions for alcohol or drugs; four speed violations, seven no drivers license violations, two no insurance violations, 15 seatbelt violations, one violation for use of a cell phone, one liquor seizure, one intersection violation, and four notice and orders for vehicle repairs.

A motorcycle-vehicle incident occurred in the 11500 block of Highway 101 after a northbound motorcycle lost control while navigating a curve. The motorcyclist crossed the centre line and collided with the side of a southbound vehicle. No one suffered any injuries and damage was minor.

A two-vehicle accident occurred in the 4700 block of Highway 101 after the first vehicle pulled in front of a second vehicle and was struck from behind. Paramedics attended as well and determined the driver of the second vehicle had sustained a possible fracture. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield.

Sometime in the past couple of weeks, a thief attempted to steal a vehicle in the 1000 block of Gibsons Way. The thief had forced a door lock open and tore apart the ignition in a failed attempt to hot-wire the vehicle.

A single-motorcycle accident was reported in the 13300 block of Highway 101 when a male was located on the road, and his scooter located in the ditch. The driver sustained injuries that required transport to the hospital and details are still being gathered. A two vehicle accident occurred on Highway 101 near Roberts Creek Road after a westbound vehicle made a sudden left turn and was struck on the passenger side by an eastbound vehicle. One passenger in the eastbound vehicle was taken to hospital for chest pains, and both vehicles had to be towed. The driver of the westbound vehicle, who admitted being at fault, was issued a violation ticket.

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Highway 101 near Lockyer Road after one vehicle was rear-ended by a second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle appeared to be impaired. The driver failed an alcohol screening device test and was issued a 24-hour driving suspension and violation ticket for following too closely. Both vehicles were towed.
