In the latest update on the water crisis, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) announced the ice installation at the Sunshine Coast Arena in Sechelt will be pushed back by two weeks.

At a Sept. 2 SCRD committee meeting, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) requested the delay. The ice will be installed in early October and available starting Oct. 12, after Thanksgiving.

A press release said, “SCRD recreation staff will be reaching out directly to groups impacted by this delayed reopening.”

The pools at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre will also remain closed, at the request of the EOC. The Gibsons and District Aquatic Facility and the Pender Harbour Aquatic and Fitness Centre remain open.

Stage 4 of water restrictions – a ban on all outdoor use of treated water – continues for much of the SCRD.

Meanwhile, registration for other SCRD recreational offerings opens at 6 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, and can be done by phone call, online or at SCRD recreation facilities. This year, recreation guides will not be sent to homes, in order to save $21,500 in costs and more than one million sheets of paper.
