Enjoying an evening cabaret at Roberts Creek Elementary School (RCES) Saturday, March 3, will help build a stage for future performances.

The Set the Stage crew, headed by Danise Lofstrom, has organized the event from 8 to 11 p.m. at the school as a way to raise funds for the stage.

"We had the Set the Stage dance and that was a big success, so this is the next big fundraising effort," Lofstrom said.

The group needs to raise around $250,000 to build the performance stage at the school. So far about $3,000 has come in.

"But I suspect the cost to come down because we will have donations of labour from locals. For example, we already have someone who has volunteered to work on the electrical," Lofstrom said.

The stage has long been a dream of parents, teachers and students at RCES as the current performance space in the school's gym is one of the heaviest booked community spaces on the Coast.

"This renders it unavailable for our own students to book it for the length of time and space needed to build, rehearse and perform a school play or presentation. A permanent stage would allow a separate room for show preparations while the gym continues to be booked by the community," Lofstrom said.

The upcoming Creek Cabaret fundraiser will feature an array of local talent including Definitely Diva, the Coast String Fiddlers Youth Group and the Coast Academy of Dance. There will also be a silent auction that will showcase a collection of work from local artists, all available for purchase.

This is a licensed event that will include free appetizers and desserts. The cost for tickets is $30 each or two for $50. All the money raised through ticket sales and silent auction bids will go directly to the Set the Stage fund.

You can purchase tickets at Talewind Books in Sechelt, Wilson Creek and Gibsons IGA stores, Gibsons Sunshine Coast Credit Union and the Roberts Creek General Store or by calling 604-885-6445.

Lofstrom is open to more fundraising ideas and invites anyone who wants to get involved in the Set the Stage project to contact her at 604-886-1371.
