Heavy rains coming to the Sunshine Coast Friday

Risk of local flooding
rain

A special weather warning has been issued for heavy rain and possible strong winds expected to hit the Sunshine Coast on Friday, Sept. 17.

A rainfall accumulation of 30 to 50 millimetres is expected in Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast from Gibsons to Powell River, eastern Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver, and the Fraser Valley, as a robust frontal system moves across the south coast of B.C., Environment Canada’s statement says.

Rain is expected to start falling overnight Thursday and continue through Friday evening. Strong winds may occur during Friday afternoon and evening.

Given the amount of rain expected, Environment Canada suggests clearing leaves and debris from drainage areas to help avoid local flooding.
