Sunshine Coast RCMP have determined that speed and driver inattentiveness were factors in a head-on collision that took place at Highway 101 near Selma Park Road on Tuesday morning.
On March 5, at approximately 7:45 a.m. RCMP was dispatched to a report of a head-on collision on Highway 101, near Sechelt, where it was reported that a person was trapped in their vehicle.
Cpl. Steve Chubey said upon officers arriving on scene, a 57-year-old Halfmoon Bay woman had been transported to St. Mary's Hospital, with non-life threatening injuries.
"The driver of a black Cadillac Escalade was still on scene and was uninjured," said Chubey in a news release. "Police were forced to stop traffic in both directions as they investigated the cause of the crash and in order to prevent further injury until the vehicles could be towed."
He said police determined through independent witnesses and the evidence left at the crash scene that the driver of the Escalade was driving northbound around the curve in the roadway, veered over the centre line into the oncoming lane and struck a southbound silver Buick Century head-on. Witnesses reported seeing the Escalade speeding and driving erratically prior to the crash, he said.
Police issued violation tickets for drive without due care and attention to the driver of the Escalade, a 38-year-old Sechelt resident.
Traffic was backed up for several kilometres for about an hour. Traffic started to flow through as normal around 9:30 a.m.
