The Sunshine Coast Grandmothers and Grand-others (SCG&G) held its first general meeting on Sunday, Feb. 4.

"We had a great turnout with more than 50 people," said group spokesperson Patt McGuire in a news release. "Lots of ideas were generated to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa and to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation's work with grandmothers and orphans."

The group thanked local artist Jan Poynter, who donated one of her beautiful paintings and the Westwind Gallery who framed the painting professionally.

The artwork will be raffled with proceeds going to Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.Tickets will be sold soon in malls and at the Landing Gallery where the artwork is on display.

The SCG&G is one of 120 groups nationwide working to support the courageous grandmothers who, having lost their own children to AIDS, are now raising their grandchildren, often in very difficult circumstances. If you are interested in getting involved in local projects, call 604-886-9381 or 604-886-2627, or email [email protected].

The next meeting is set for Sunday, March 4, at 1:42 p.m. at the Chatelech Secondary School library.

Everyone is welcome -you don't have to be a grandmother to join.
