Spring break on the Sunshine Coast is a time when the Crossroads Community Church senior youth team swings into action.
A team of 27 dedicated grades 10 to 12 students hosted more than 60 elementary school children for a week-long camp at Latona Beach on the north end of Gambier Island. This team carries on a proud 13-year tradition of hosting camps for local children during the spring school break at a time where most camps aren't even thinking of opening their doors yet.
The team has spent the past several months taking leadership training under the direction of Pastor Nancy Shadlock, operating car washes and other fundraising events to help keep costs as low as possible for families and contributing a great deal to the camp program in areas of drama, music, options, indoor and outdoor games and study.
Fifteen adult volunteers (four of them area school teachers) contributed their week off to helping out in areas such as nursing, youth support, running activities, kitchen staff, transportation co-ordination, programming, talks and a host of other activities. The weather was a perfect mixture of typical Sunshine Coast weather, rain with sun interspersed at all the right moments.
The 60-plus children are already looking forward to next year and they all want to bring their friends.
