At the Sunshine Coast Community to Community Forum, held on Monday, April 8, the adoption of a principle for collaborative leadership was emphasized as a key element in maintaining and enhancing the cultural, social, environmental and economic well being of the Sunshine Coast and its communities.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) elected officials and staff hosted the forum and it was the first time that representatives from the Town of Gibsons, District of Sechelt, Squamish Nation and Sechelt Nation had come together to discuss issues of mutual interest and the principle of collaborative decision-making.

"The forum seeks to enhance collective action among local governments and First Nations," said SCRD board chair Garry Nohr. "It does so through the provision of a common forum for dialogue, shared knowledge and information, and a transparent process that encourages awareness and involvement."

Agenda topics included brief presentations on each organization's structure, First Nations' land use plans, and land use development processes.

"The First Nations and local governments are very supportive of the forum," added Nohr. "This forum is a powerful voice for Sunshine Coast communities. It provides an opportunity to share information and have dialogue on issues of mutual concern."

First Nations and local governments spoke to their respective land use plans and official community plans to provide a formal foundation to foster collaborative decision-making. All parties agreed to continue to regularly consult on issues affecting our communities.
