What did Gibsons look like in its early years? What role did women play in the town's development?
Helen McCall's legacy of local photography and the role of the Howe Sound Women's Institute are the focus of a talk by Bee Jackson, curator of the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives, on Jan. 29.
The talk will be augmented by display cases with artifacts, clothing displays and many photos of early Gibsons. There will even be a chorus or two of the "Gibsons Song," written by the Women's Institute.
This is the second in the fifth Monday speaker series, sponsored by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), Sunshine Coast. Talks are at St. John's United Church in Davis Bay at 1 p.m. and are open to the public. Admission is by donation.
CFUW Sunshine Coast is dedicated to empowering women and girls through education. A major focus of the club is providing bursaries to help local women attain a post-secondary education.
The final part of the series will be the history of the Shishalh women, told by Rita Poulsen and elders of the Sechelt Indian Band, on April 30.
