In a prompt follow-up to a delegation request made by representatives of the Sunshine Coast Junior Hockey Society during a committee meeting that same afternoon, at its March 7 meeting, Gibsons council provided support in principle for an addition to the Gibsons and Area Community Centre which would become home to a potential Coast-based junior hockey franchise.

The society announced plans in 2022 to apply for a franchise in the Pacific Junior Hockey League, which would require an enhanced ice facility.

The society would be responsible for funding and building the enlargement to that Sunshine Coast Regional District facility, which is located on town-owned property.

Staff were authorized to discuss changes required to the license of occupation between those two local governments to facilitate the proposed changes to the building footprint.

Council also agreed to provide a letter of support to assist the society in its efforts to move the project forward with the league, community, other local governments and potential grant funders.
