A 28-unit multi-family residential development at 834 Park Rd. was referred to a public hearing for Sept 21. This followed two readings of a zoning amendment bylaw for the development at the Sept. 7 regular council meeting.

The rezoning would permit the site, which currently has one single-family home, to be redeveloped with cluster housing.

Focusing on water supply issues in the community, Coun. Annemarie De Andrade voted against the motions. “I am concerned to approve any more density before we receive the results of the aquifer study,” she said.

Contractor Waterline Resources is updating the aquifer mapping study done between 2009 and 2013. The update, including predictions on impacts to the health of the aquifer from climate change impacts and ongoing water use, is slated to be completed by early 2022.

Parkland traffic concerns

The town will be asking the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure why it denied the developer’s request for an access to Reed Road from the final phase of the Parkland subdivision. Council deferred consideration of rezoning bylaws for a 38-unit cluster residential development on Celia Crescent while it awaits this information and considers asking for another traffic study for the area.

Concerns were identified about adding more units to the established subdivision, which has only a single road connection (to Payne Road).

Mayor Bill Beamish noted that several residents of the subdivision had contacted the town with concerns and that his main interest was ensuring the people would be able to safely leave the area in the case of an emergency.

Blackfish Pub Patio

Council gave its OK for the patio at the Blackfish Pub on Venture Way to remain in place on a permanent basis. It will request that the Liquor and Cannabis and Regulation Branch restrict the pub’s outdoor space operating hours to 10 p.m. at the latest.

The patio was installed in 2021 to create safe serving spaces following COVID-19 safety protocols.
