Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following from April 13 to 24:
• On April 22, police attended a report of a break-and-enter-in-progress at a site in the 900 block of Woodsworth Road, Gibsons, after the suspect was witnessed damaging some property. The suspect was detained by the witness until police arrived. Police arrested the male, who was found in possession of stolen property as well as a concealed, prohibited weapon, was arrested and multiple charges are being recommended. The file is still under investigation.
Collision
• On April 22, police attended a two-vehicle incident at the intersection of Norwest Bay Road and McCourt Road, Sechelt, after the driver of the first vehicle, distracted by something occurring nearby, took his eyes off the road briefly. When he looked forward again, he realized the second vehicle was stopped at a crosswalk for a pedestrian, and was unable to stop in time to avoid colliding into the vehicle’s rear. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported, although one passenger in the second vehicle was assessed by Emergency Health Services at the scene. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene due to damage. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Break & Enter
• At approximately 2 a.m. on April 24, police attended a break-and-enter at a residence in the 4700 block of Billy Goat Road, Madeira Park, after the owner’s security system captured footage of two male suspects entering the premises. By the time police arrived, the suspects had fled with several of the security cameras, an Xbox and assorted games, a toolbox, and some alcohol. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2021-2617. The file is still under investigation.
Hit & Run
• On April 24, a witness reported a hit and run at the intersection of Bay Road and Whitaker Road, Sechelt, after a 1990s model Ford F250, either light blue or grey in colour, collided into and knocked over a stop sign before driving away. The witness, who was unable to capture the vehicle’s licence plate, noted there was a headache rack on the rear window. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file number 2021-2633.
Impaired Driving
• On April 23, a witness reported a possible impaired driver westbound on Highway 101 from Roberts Creek, as the vehicle was swerving in its lane and travelling at erratic speeds. Police located the suspect vehicle in Selma Park and initiated a traffic stop. After speaking with the driver, the driver was given a roadside alcohol-screening test. After two warn results, the suspect was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was towed. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.
Mischief
• On the evening of April 23, security video captured a mischief incident in the 5400 block of Wharf Street, Sechelt, after a male youth was captured kicking a planter, knocking it over and breaking it in the process. The file is still under investigation.
Fraud
• On April 15, a Sunshine Coast resident reported a fraud after a large sum of money was e-transferred from her account to an unknown person at an unknown phone number. The resident, who had received a number of emails that appeared to be from her financial institution, suspected the emails were scams and had marked them as spam. It was shortly after this that she discovered the unauthorized e-transfer. The resident contacted her bank right away and her account was shut down; she is also having her computer professionally serviced to make sure no viruses or malware have been installed on it. The file is still under investigation. Also, scam alerts are usually posted on the sites of large organizations such utility companies, financial institutions and government agencies.
• On April 23, a Coast resident reported falling for a common scam after her computer froze and a pop-up message advised her to call the listed number for assistance. The resident made the call and spoke to someone purporting to be from Microsoft Tech Support. The scammer told the resident that she’d need to send them a money order to get her computer fixed, so the resident went to the post office and sent a money order to the provided address in the southern United States. Shortly afterwards, the resident learned from a friend that she’d likely fallen for a scam and was able to cancel the money order. The resident has also taken her computer to a local business to have it professionally checked and cleared of any viruses or malware.
Found Property
• On April 13, a cellphone in a distinctive case found in the 600 block of Park Road, Gibsons, was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file 2021-2354.
• On April 22, a bike found in the 5500 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, was turned in. The men’s bike, which has been modified, may be claimed by owner with detailed description within 90 days. Please reference police file 2021-2570.
