Gibsons arson arraignment delayed

The 13-year-old youth charged with arson in connection with the June 4 fire in Lower Gibsons will have his arraignment in Sechelt provincial court on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

The 13-year-old youth charged with arson in connection with the June 4 fire in Lower Gibsons will have his arraignment in Sechelt provincial court on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

The youth appeared in court with his father on Wednesday, July 28, for an arraignment, but both Crown and defence counsel requested the matter be adjourned so the two could discuss the case further.

Arraignments are typically held to give a suspect the chance to make a guilty or not guilty plea before a judge.

The youth was arrested June 6 after a second youth, aged 11, went to police with his father to provide information regarding the alleged setting of the fire. Further police investigation led to the arrest of the 13-year-old. No charges can be laid against the 11-year-old.

RCMP said the two youths were skipping school and hanging out under Coles Marine Diesel at the time of the fire.

No one was hurt in the fire, though it did completely destroy Coles Marine Diesel and the former Wynken Blynken Nod Backpackers B&B, leaving several people homeless.

An publication ban in the Youth Criminal Justice Act prevents the publishing of information that may identify the youths.
