Sunshine Coast Avalon Recovery Society will hold a dinner and silent auction fundraiser on Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Gumboot Café with doors at 6 p.m, a buffet dinner and entertainment by Angie McCauley.
Currently, a group of dedicated volunteers are working to establish an Avalon Women's Centre on the Sunshine Coast. Avalon Recovery Society, first established on the Lower Mainland in 1990, is a non-profit, drop-in facility dedicated to helping women recover from addiction. Success comes from peer support and involvement in a 12-step recovery program. Avalon's two Vancouver centres now host more than 100 various 12-step meetings each month, attracting women through referrals from doctors, counsellors, hospitals and outreach efforts in the community.
Avalon is unique in that there are no other non-residential, peer support facilities available to women recovering from addiction in Canada. A Sunshine Coast Avalon Centre will provide a safe place for women to begin their individual journeys. The centre will offer resource information, life skills workshops, a lending library, a clothing exchange and volunteer opportunities. Childcare is also provided for noon AA meetings, a key element for women who often cannot access support without babysitting.
The disease of addiction impacts all of us. Women suffering from the disease come from all walks of life and represent a true cross-section of our society. Don't miss this opportunity to support a grassroots organization that will make a special difference to women in recovery and their families.
