Eight applicants have been offered funding to participate in the federal environmental assessment for a Burnco aggregate mine in West Howe Sound.
The recipients of funding are: the Future of Howe Sound Society, the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA), Cowichan Tribes, Musqueam Indian Band, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Halalt First Nation, Hwlitsum Services Society, and the Métis Nation British Columbia.
An environmental assessment for Burnco, begun in April of 2010, is currently working towards completing a draft environmental impact statement (EIS).
The May 4 announcement said $44,250 will be allocated to support public participation during the coming assessment phases, including a review and comment of the draft EIS.
An aggregate mine located 22km southwest of Squamish could have a lifespan of between 20 and 30 years, while producing as much as 1.6 million tonnes of product yearly.
According to chair Jason Herz, the SCCA received word that the group will receive up to $6,850 in funding.
"This funding is disbursed as reimbursements for incurred and approved expenses so there are no guarantees we shall receive final payments," said Herz. "Our intent is to utilize a portion of the funds to engage a (registered professional biologist) to participate on our behalf to ensure the biological values are properly considered."
The SCCA had requested a funding ceiling of $10,200.
"We feel it is important for the SCCA to participate in this EA to prevent further destruction of the biodiversity of our region," Herz added.
The Future of Howe Sound Society did not return requests for comment.
