Local women leaders will be speaking about their experiences in public roles on Thursday, Feb. 6 at Capilano University.

Sechelt Mayor Darnelda Siegers, Festival of Written Arts president Jean Bennett and Staff Sgt. Poppy Hallam of the Sunshine Coast RCMP will be speaking about what they hope to achieve in their current roles and the challenges they face, and will share advice and tips for aspiring leaders.

“We chose these three speakers because we wanted to host an event that celebrates women in leadership, particularly those in high-profile roles that are not often held by women,” said Diana Adams, president of the Sunshine Coast chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW-SC), which is sponsoring the event along with Capilano University.

The women represent a cross-section of backgrounds, said Adams, and “reflect various distinct aspects of our community such as politics, public service and the arts. We also wanted to celebrate the achievements of these women, and to inspire other young women to contemplate becoming leaders themselves.”

She said CFUW-SC typically reaches out to the community every other year by hosting a free public event. “We feel this helps us to connect directly with people other than our membership to let them know what we are about and how we contribute to our community by supporting local causes and issues that matter.”

The free event starts at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be provided and registration is required: [email protected]
