Long distance charges no longer apply to Telus customers calling from the Coast to Metro Vancouver. Those charges are also gone for Telus customers calling between Gibsons, Pender Harbour and Port Mellon. The change means customers no longer have to dial 1 or 0 at the beginning of calls to these areas.

"By providing free local calling from the vibrant communities along the Sunshine Coast to Metro Vancouver, Telus is making good on our commitment to provide the best possible service for our customers," said Lisa LaMothe, Telus general manager of the Sunshine Coast. "We're listening to our customers and we are pleased to help make calling friends and family in Metro Vancouver even easier."

Coast mayors expressed their pleasure with the change this week. "The implementation of local calling from the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver area will provide an adrenaline shot of economic viability to local businesses and increase their ability to compete in larger markets such as Vancouver," Gibsons Mayor Wayne Rowe said.

Sechelt Mayor John Henderson also praised the effort.

"Sechelt encourages service providers like Telus to take an innovative approach to product delivery," he said. "The Telus local calling exchange will benefit our community by making communication easier and more economical for local residents and businesses."

Telus plans to launch free calling from Metro Vancouver to the Sunshine Coast later in 2014.
