In an effort to promote safer, more sustainable ways to travel, more than 16,000 graduating secondary students in communities throughout the province have received a special GradPASS. The pass is good for two days of unlimited travel within their local transit system in the month of June.
"High school graduation is an important milestone in many young people's lives," said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom in a news release. "Choosing to travel for free on public transit on grad day will allow students to celebrate their achievement safely. Thanks to BC Transit for encouraging our young people to take the bus on their big day."
The program has been available in Victoria since 1990 and now includes the Sunshine Coast as well as other municipalities.
"The GradPASS is our way of helping graduating students celebrate their achievements safely," added Manuel Achadinha, president and CEO of BC Transit. "Congratulations to the 2011 grads, who by continuing to choose transit, will shape our communities for a more sustainable future."
The GradPASS program was developed in Vancouver in 1988 through Counterattack, BC Transit and local school boards to help get students home safely at graduation time.
Students must scratch off the travel date on the GradPASS and present a valid Student ID to the bus driver. Passes are non?transferable.
