Flotilla to protest against LNG tanker route

Vote With Your Boat

A flotilla protest is planned for July 11 in Howe Sound to say no to liquid natural gas (LNG) tankers from the proposed Woodfibre LNG facility.

“We’re a lot of people concerned about the safety standards that are being ignored,” said organizer Fitch Cady.

Boats are gathering at 11 a.m. east of Bowyer Island and communicating on VHF CH 19.

They plan to travel across the proposed LNG tanker route that comes down the middle of Howe Sound and goes between Horseshoe Bay and Bowen Island.

“SIGTTO, the Society of International Gas and Tanker Terminal Operators, has standards about putting tanker traffic as close as this is to populations,” Cady said. “These standards are there, worldwide, for a reason. When things go wrong, they go wrong – so you don’t put LNG tanker routes this close to populated areas. That’s being ignored.”

The B.C. government will be making a decision on the future of the Woodfibre LNG site based on the environmental assessment report to be released in mid-July.

“So we’re going to send horn blows to Christy Clark,” Cady said. “Go out and have our boat horns say no LNG tankers in Howe Sound.”

The boats will follow the proposed tanker path up to the north end of Gambier Island. The band Brothers in Farms will perform a protest concert at 2 p.m.
