On June 26, about 50 people stood in the shade near the community hall as Doug Buckle demonstrated the fire truck he built himself. He was joined by Lions Bay volunteer firefighters Fire Chief Andrew Oliver and Bob Allen, and the Gambier Fire Equipment Group (GFEG) coordinator Bob Ostiguy.
“We’re here to help Doug and Bob. Help them recruit, get some young blood, get people with energy that are interested in fire and rescue,” Allen said. “There's nothing more exhilarating than helping another human being when they’re down.”
The presentation focused on fire suppression and regular training, and highlighted the need to have residents feel comfortable handling the available equipment. The spray from the hose can reach up to 65 to 70 feet. The volunteers said that anyone who can drive a truck would be able to drive the fire truck, after simple but necessary training.
Residents were invited to ask questions about the truck and test out the foam air compressor, as the organizers sought new recruits to join the island’s firefighting efforts.
One resident asked if the foam contains chemicals. The demonstrators confirmed the foam is environmentally friendly, and older versions of toxic foams are no longer used for firefighting.
During the presentation, Buckle said he already has his eye on another vehicle to convert into a second fire truck for the island.
