Fire department is gaining steam

The newly-formed Egmont and District Volunteer Fire Department (EDVFD) continues to gather momentum with the receipt of a new donation. An anonymous donor gave a gift of $2,500 to be used for the fire department building or equipment.

This, added to an earlier donation of one acre of land on Egmont Road from Dean and Sandra Bosch, has given the EDVFD a good start.

Committee chairman Doug Provost explained that the committee's first priority is to launch and conduct a petition process to get taxpayer approval for the fire district.

The proposed eight-kilometre district will include Earl's Cove, Egmont, Ruby Lake and part of Sakinaw Lake.

The feasibility committee has formed three sub-committees: a finance committee headed by Provost, a retired banker, and a public relations, fund-raising and fire hall committee headed by John Duggan, a retired superintendent from the federal penal system.

A third sub-committee is the fire-fighting committee headed by Peter Sly, a retired fire chief from Surrey. This committee will cover technical training, equipment and volunteer firefighters.

Volunteers are being sought for the planning stages of the hall and other technical aspects of the department. An account has been established for the volunteer fire department to receive additional donations at the Sunshine Coast Credit Union in Madeira Park.
