Events moved from contaminated beach

A swimming advisory was still in effect Thursday at Armours Beach because of fecal coliform counts, a few days before the Gibsons Sea Cavalcade water events.

The Sunday events originally planned for Armours Beach - the Keats Island swim, kayak race, kids' swimming races, beach games and jousting - will instead be held in the water in front of Gramma's Pub, according to Cavalcade committee chair Conchita Harding. She expected to get the most up-to-date information out to people on Saturday and Sunday through announcements at the parade, flyers, signs and radio announcements.

The Gibsons swimming pool would be their last alternative option if things were to change and the area in front of Gramma's is not safe to swim in on the weekend.

The Town of Gibsons and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority (VCHA) jointly issued the advisory July 12. VCHA drinking water officer Tim Adams confirmed Thursday, July 20, that Armours Beach was still not safe to swim in.
