How would you like to do something good for youth on the Sunshine Coast while having a thoroughly enjoyable evening?

On Sunday, April 4, the Live Music Society presents Pavlo in concert at the Roberts Creek Hall. Sponsored by Daphne's Restaurant in Sechelt and Mosaic Market in Davis Bay, this event is a fund-raiser for Sunshine Coast girls' volleyball.

The Grade 9 Chilly Peppers, coached by Jan Ritchie and Barry Krangle, are on their way to the Western Canadian Championships in Calgary in May, and you can help them get there.

Pavlo Simitkidis hails from Toronto, where he has played for the Danforth folks for years. The son of a Greek furrier, he started playing semi-professionally at the age of 14, after four years of classical guitar training. He studied music at York University and music business at the Harris Institute for the Arts. Now in his mid-30s, he's spent the last 20 years selling his CDs from the trunk of his car.

Last year, he was sent on a 65-city tour across Canada with Liona Boyd. This year, he has returned as headliner in 40 of those cities. He's booked until the middle of next year throughout North America and has been asked to perform at the Olympic Games in Athens in August.

Simitkidis calls his music "Mediterranean with elements of Greek, Italian, Spanish and North African folk and dance music." Its hypnotic, rhythmic intensity moves every fibre of body and soul. Winner in the Favourite World Artist or Group category at the Canadian Independent Music Awards, Pavlo is our Canadian-born Oscar Lopez.

Bask in the warmth of Pavlo's dazzling guitar work and support our future volleyball champions on Sunday, April 4, 7:30 p.m., at the Roberts Creek Hall. Tickets at $18 are available at Roberts Creek Health Food Store, WindSong Gallery and Coast Books. There will be concert seating with a dance area in the back for those who can't resist the urge to move. Accompanied minors are welcome.
