Emergency crews had a busy holiday weekend responding to numerous incidents.
Late Sunday night, Sunshine Coast RCMP, Sechelt fire department and B.C. Ambulance paramedics were called out to an accident on the Jackson Brothers logging road (the road to Tetrahedron Provincial Park).
Sechelt Fire Chief Bill Higgs said 23 members attended the accident scene just before 10:30 p.m. Higgs said four pieces of apparatus and stretchers were used to get the people out of the vehicle.
Higgs said three occupants were inside the vehicle and one person had to be hauled up the hill in a basket stretcher. He said the other two were "somewhat mobile."
"They were coming down the mountain and had apparently been camping up there for a few days," said Higgs. "They failed to negotiate one of the corners on their way down. Luckily there were other people camping down the road a bit and they heard the noise and went to see what it was. They found the accident and phoned emergency response.
"It was a significant accident. We had to build a trail and rig a haul system to get everyone out safely."
Police are still investigating the accident. As of press time Thursday afternoon, police could not confirm the extent of the injuries to the victims.
On Monday evening, Aug. 7, a 79-year-old Sechelt woman was backing into the inside pump area at the Petrocan gas station in Sechelt when she got into trouble.
"A dog in her vehicle jumped into her lap, which startled her," said Sgt. Gerry Webb. "She accelerated and struck the windows in the Petrocan with the rear of her car."
Webb said extensive damage was done to the garage and rear of her vehicle, but no one was injured. Webb added that the driver was not charged, but her driver's licence is being reviewed.
On Tuesday morning just after 9 a.m., a 53-year-old Powell River woman was driving southbound in the 12000 block of Hwy. 101 near Pender Harbour when she lost control on the slippery roads on an extreme right hand curve and went off the road.
"The vehicle went approximately 35 feet down the embankment and was totalled," said Webb. "She managed to crawl out of the vehicle and suffered only minor injuries."
Webb said she was charged with operating an improperly licensed vehicle.
Just after 11 a.m. on Monday, police responded to another accident near Sutherland Road.
A 60-year-old Alaskan man was heading north on Hwy. 101 when he started to hydroplane in his 2000 Ford SUV due to the wet roads and crossed over the double solid line into the southbound lane. A 23-year-old male cyclist was southbound at the time and saw the vehicle coming towards him.
"He jumped off his bike and rolled into the ditch and the vehicle hit his bicycle, destroying it," Webb said. No one was injured in the accident.- With files from Christine Wood
