A 48-year-old Gibsons man is facing charges of production of a controlled substance after a bust in Gibsons last Friday night.

On May 22, Sunshine Coast RCMP executed a search warrant at a home on Chaster Road. The search of the home revealed an indoor marijuana grow operation with approximately 550 plants. The man was arrested inside the home and is currently in police custody.

101 accidents

Charges have yet to be filed in the string of the serious car accidents on Highway 101 in February.

The first accident, on Feb. 9, involved a fatality when two vehicles collided head-on near Conrad Road. Sunshine Coast RCMP Cpl. Murray McNeil said the investigation is ongoing, but motor vehicle act charges are likely.

The second accident, on Feb. 19, involved a five-car pile-up and one woman being sent to Vancouver General Hospital in critical condition. McNeil said alcohol is suspected and RCMP are waiting on an analyst's report before considering charges.

The third accident on, Feb. 28, involved a single pick-up truck which lost control and hit a telephone pole. Police called in a canine unit to search the area when the driver said he could not remember if he had passengers in the vehicle with him.

The driver was airlifted to hospital in Vancouver. McNeil said alcohol was suspected in the crash, and RCMP are waiting on an analyst's report before considering charges.

All three accidents required RCMP to close the highway for several hours.

ATV accident

A 27-year-old Halfmoon Bay man has been released from hospital after a close call on an ATV.

On Thursday, May 14, police responded to a report of an injured ATV operator on Trout Lake Road in Halfmoon Bay.

Police attended along with paramedics and members of the Halfmoon Bay fire department. When emergency personnel arrived, they found the injured man, who was suffering from a head injury after he was thrown from the ATV he had been operating.

The man was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital. According to police, he was released from hospital the next day.

Police investigation reveled that the injured man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Search report?

On May 16 at approximately 11 p.m., police received a report of a single flare sighting coming from land at Nine Mile Point in Sechelt Inlet.

Police responded to the call with a patrol vessel and made extensive patrols of the area. Police spoke to a group of kayakers camping at Nine Mile Point who advised they had not seen a flare.

After further investigation, RCMP concluded their search in the early morning hours of May 17.

Police would like to remind the community that flares are to be used for emergency purposes only.
