The District of Sechelt will present details and cost estimates of a Davis Bay sea walk expansion project Thursday evening, Oct. 7, at the Seaside Centre.
In mid-September, Sechelt council passed a motion approving a contentious highway-widening plan in Davis Bay, on condition that the District work with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to expand the sea walk in the area affected by the construction. That decision reversed an earlier council motion voting down the highway improvements - a decision that would have seen $2.5 million in provincial and federal money leave the community.
The District has since been working with MOTI to flesh out and cost out a sea walk expansion plan; the Oct. 7 meeting will update the community on the proposed project.
"[The meeting] is basically to look for support for a plan that will allow us to do the Ministry's safety improvements and retain the seawall usability," said Connie Jordison, the District's co-ordinator of council and community relations.
Jordison said that, as it currently stands, the sea walk expansion plan would widen the sea walk back to two metres wide for the 150-metre length of the construction zone - where the sea walk would otherwise have been reduced in width.
"We'd be widening back to a two-metre wide sidewalk that would allow for people to still pass and wheelchairs to get past," she said.
According to the plan the widened section would be built out of concrete, and a railing would be added on the water-side edge for safety reasons.
The community is invited to view plans and conceptual drawings as of 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Seaside Centre. District staff will be on hand to provide information and receive comments. At 7, staff will make a presentation about the proposed project, followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and provide input.
The plans will also be posted at www.sechelt.ca. For further information, contact the District office at 604-885-1986, or [email protected].
