Following the resignation of Randy Stoyko two weeks ago, the District of Sechelt has turned locally to file its vacant position of chief of innovation and growth (CIG).

In a press release issued by the District on Wednesday afternoon, Ron Buchhorn was named the new CIG.

"Ron is familiar with our community, having lived and worked on the Sunshine Coast for a number of years," said Mayor John Henderson. "He has a strong and diversified background in management, operations and strategic planning and is a welcome addition to the District's management team."

Henderson said Buchhorn has extensive experience in business improvement and employee relations bringing the District a proven ability to manage organizations for excellence.

He graduated from Elphinstone Secondary School and obtained a BComm from the University of British Columbia. Since 2008, he has operated his own consulting firm, advising companies across Canada on business planning, process implementation and performance management.

He is a former COO of Catalyst Paper, assistant deputy minister with the Province of B.C., and vice president with the Workers Compensation Board of B.C.

He has also served in a variety of senior management roles in the forestry, mining and oil and gas industries.

"I am excited about the opportunity to work with District council and staff to build a strong future for Sechelt," said Buchhorn. "This area has tremendous assets, including one of the highest quality of life ratings in the province. These are things local government needs to continue to develop, support and enhance. I want to be able to use my experience to help make this happen."

Sechelt's CIG position was developed in 2012. As the senior member of the District's staff, the CIG is responsible for all facets of managing the activities of the District.
