Sechelt council requested a status report from School District No. 46 regarding the proposed Neighbourhood of Learning at Sechelt Elementary School during their June 6 regular council meeting.
The recommendation for the update came from the minutes of the last Sechelt cultural complex task force meeting, and it was passed without discussion.
Council also passed a motion to request staff put up a Sechelt cultural complex task force information page on the municipal website.
Sechelt closed
Councillors Doug Hockley and Chris Moore debated the merits of a letter sent to the district by S. N. Harding that described a rainy day in Sechelt devoid of fun because the pool was closed, shops weren't open and campfires were banned at local campsites.
"I'm disappointed that a member of our community would come to the District of Sechelt with such a negative letter," Hockley said. "A very non-constructive letter too. It's just heaping a pile of poop on the table and saying 'here deal with it.'"
Moore took exception to the comment.
"I liked the letter. I thought the letter hit it right on the chops well. I'm assuming the pool was down for two weeks being fixed again and I certainly don't agree with the lack of ability to have a campfire," Moore said. "Pretty soon we won't be able to light a match in this town without fear of asphyxiating somebody."
He said the District had a long way to go to become the tourist attraction it desired to be.
Without any more discussion, council received the letter, but did not decide to do anything further with it.
New CAO
Coun. Darnelda Siegers reported that the District has been interviewing candidates for the new chief of innovation and growth position. So far, six potential candidates have been interviewed and a decision is expected within the next few weeks.
Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Mayor John Henderson declared June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in the district.
The day is meant to recognize that seniors deserve to live safely with dignity, and to encourage residents to watch for signs of abuse such as physical trauma, withdrawal, depression, anxiety and fear.
