Emergency personnel attended the scene of a single vehicle rollover in Sechelt shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 28.
Sunshine Coast RCMP, the Sechelt Fire Department and BC Ambulance service arrived to find an SUV on its roof in the southbound lane of Highway 101, just west of Shorncliffe Avenue. The elderly female occupant was still in the vehicle, secured by her seatbelt in the driver’s seat.
The Jaws of Life were used to free the woman, who was taken to the hospital with undetermined injuries but was “conscious and talking at the scene,” Sunshine Coast RCMP Const. Harrison Mohr said.
“After reviewing the collision scene and speaking with a witness, police believe a medical incident may have contributed to the collision, and speed is not believed to have been a factor,” Mohr said.
“This collision highlights the importance of seatbelt use. Despite the vehicle landing on its roof, the driver was held securely in her seat, and was still upside down herself when emergency personnel arrived. The outcome would have been far worse had the driver not been wearing her seatbelt.”
