A Roberts Creek woman is dead after a head-on, two-car collision on Highway 101 Monday afternoon.

According to Sunshine Coast RCMP, Ruth Gregory, 79, was driving north on the highway near Conrad Road around 1 p.m. when a southbound vehicle crossed over a solid yellow line into the oncoming lane and collided with Gregory's car. Gregory was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the southbound vehicle was air-lifted to Vancouver General Hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries including a broken jaw and some bleeding on the brain according to Const. Adriaan de Jong.

De Jong said traffic charges were likely in the case, but it was not known if criminal charges would be laid until RCMP had a proper statement from the other driver, which will not happen until the driver is released from hospital.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the collision, according to de Jong.

The accident caused the highway's closure from about 1:30 until 9:15 p.m. Traffic was rerouted via Lower Road and back onto the highway at Joe Road.
