A multi-vehicle crash last Thursday (Feb. 19) on Highway 101 has left one woman in critical condition.

The 60-year-old woman was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with life threatening injuries after her southbound car collided head on with a northbound vehicle attempting to pass at Conrad Road. The collision caused both vehicles to spin off the road hitting other cars in the process.

Sunshine Coast RCMP say the driver of the northbound vehicle, a 63-year-old male, was allegedly impaired at the time.

In total, five vehicles were involved in the accident. Drivers in the other three vehicles received only minor injuries.

According to Const. Rick Wells, the investigation is ongoing, and charges are likely for the male driver who is suspected of causing the accident.Highway 101 was closed from about 4:30 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday while police investigated. Traffic was detoured to Lower Road and back on to the highway at Joe Road.

This is the second serious car accident to happen at that stretch of highway in two weeks, but Wells said the design of the road cannot be blamed.

"There's nothing wrong with the roadway. This is the human factor again. If people would drive a little more cautiously, there wouldn't be any problem," Wells said.
