CPAS presents conference

The ninth annual parent conference is coming to Elphinstone Secondary School on April 1 and 2 presented by Coastal Parents Actively Sharing (CPAS).

The ninth annual parent conference is coming to Elphinstone Secondary School on April 1 and 2 presented by Coastal Parents Actively Sharing (CPAS).

This conference entitled It's all in your head: changing the way you think about drugs, disorders and discipline, features three speakers over the two-days. First is S.C. RCMP Const. Bryson Hill on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Hill will provide a local perspective on the drug scene. Conference participants will have an opportunity to view a display of drugs and drug paraphernalia at Hill's talk.

"Parents can bring their kids and use this as an opportunity to broach the subject of drugs," said Randy Johnson of CPAS.

On Saturday, April 2 from 9 a.m. to noon, speaker Victoria Maxwell will give her personal story of living with mental illness.

Maxwell will provide, a brave, funny and compelling look at experiencing, surviving and coming to terms with mental illness.

Then from 1 to 3 p.m., Kathy Lynn will speak on discipline.

A respected parenting educator, Lynn gives parents practical, useful and thoughtful advice to help their children grow into responsible, resourceful and resilient people who treat themselves and other with dignity and regard.

Lynn has worked in TV, radio, newspapers and magazines to help parents rededicate themselves to raising their children. Host of Parenting Today, she has become a leading advocate for children, parents and families.

These three speakers round out the conference that also offers participants lunch catered by Alternative School culinary arts students, a chance to win door prizes, a 50/50 draw, and display tables outlining services available to parents.

The cost is $17 for Friday night and $22 for the Saturday line up, or $32 for the entire two-day conference.

Students are welcome to attend the Friday night drug talk for a donation of any size.
